As specialists in internet marketing, many website owners ask us ‘how do I get on Google’. Getting your website listed on the Google search engine is surprisingly easy and best of all its completely free!
Once you get your website on Google you can start to receive visits from users searching for your subject on Google. There are several simple steps you need to take in order to get on Google.
Step 1 – Complete Your Website
You should make sure your website is completed before you start the process to get it on Google. For example don’t submit a ‘website under construction’ page or the ‘this domain has been registered’ page that may be provided by your domain or hosting provider. You should instead wait until you have a finished website with actual content. If you are not ready to build a full website just yet you can start off with a simple page or two, but just make sure they talk about your subject.
Step 2 – Submit it to Google
To get on Google you need to tell them your website now exists, otherwise it is unlikely to find it all on its own. Fortunately Google offers a free submission service for new websites. You used to be able to simply visit the Google home page for your country, click the link at the bottom that says ‘Business Solutions’ and then click a link to Submit. Now you need to create a Google account, then open a Google Webmaster Tools account.
Step 3 – Encourage Google to Index Your Website
Once your website has been submitted to Google it can some time for it to come and visit your website. Until it does it can’t categorise the subject matter of your website and add it to its search results (a process called indexing). There is a way to speed up this process though – try and get another longer established website to link to your own site as Google follows links from one site to another. The more established the website you can get a link from the better as this means you will get found sooner. Make sure the link is formatted as a hyperlink in the other website – if you can click on it and you then visit your own website then Google will be able to do the same.
If you don’t know of anyone else with a website that could link to you then try submitting your website to an online directory site; ideally one which is relevant to your subject or region.
Step 4 – Check you have Got in Google
Once Google has found your website and added it to its index then you should start to appear in search results and start to receive visits. However if you want to double check if your site is in Google, there is a quick and free way to do this. Visit the Google search engine and in the search box type the text site: directly in front of the full URL for your website, like this example; site:http://www.webscapeseo.com. The results will show you the pages in your website which have been indexed, so if no results are shown the site isn’t indexed yet. If you have a large website it may take some time for all your pages to get in Google or you may need the help of a web expert to make sure there are no navigation or indexing errors in your website.
