When it comes to marketing your business online with social media, Facebook is usually the first port of call. While it’s true that a Facebook page can be an integral part of your digital marketing strategy, it can be tempting to put all of your eggs in one basket. With social media there are a lot of different platforms to choose from, and Twitter is up there with the best of them. If used correctly Twitter can potentially improve brand awareness, reach new customers, generate leads and in some cases, it can even boost the SEO value of your web site.
“At least 73% of marketers plan on increasing their use of YouTube/video, blogs, Facebook and Twitter.” – 2011 Social Media Marketing Industry Report
Twitter is unique from other types of social media due to the 140 character rule. Messages (referred to as Tweets) sent out from your account must be 140 characters or less. At first this can sound daunting; leaving many asking “how can I get my thoughts across in so few words?”. However, the need for concise “on-message” tweets can be a blessing in disguise! If done correctly, a well maintained, regularly updated Twitter profile can help to humanise your brand.
At Webscape, we’ve found Twitter is a fast-paced, intimate, and extremely powerful marketing tool. By adhering to a few tried-and-testing techniques you’ll be gaining followers and interacting with users in no time.
We’ve put together a list of “Twitter Dos and Don’ts” to help get you started…
DO
- Respond directly to tweets starting with @username.
- Refer to another user by starting with words then insert the @username.
- For personal, private replies send a DM (Direct Message) rather than a tweet.
- Be friendly, insightful, concise, and most importantly, helpful.
- Use an informal tone of voice. Have a sense of humour, when appropriate.
- Maintain an ongoing relationship with quality users. Try your to keep the followers you have.
DON’T
- Tweet about you product all day long. It’s boring, spammy and will lose you followers.
- Auto DM new followers. Instead send each a personal message based on common interest.
- Ignore @replies – try to keep the conversation going, but do be insightful!
- Ignore negative feedback. Send them a DM explaining the situation and offering to help.
